Magic Mutant Nightmare Girl is truly unlike anything I have read before. Grammar gives us such a fantastic read about a girl who turns into a mutant after accidentally coming into contact with someone’s experiment gone wrong. Holly as a character is very eccentric and definitely makes some hasty decisions throughout the story, but this makes the pacing of the book very readable and there truly never is a dull moment while you are reading. We are immediately thrown into the action and the action never really lets us. If you’re looking for a slower paced fantasy novel, you have definitely come to the wrong place. Holly is definitely frustrating at times with how she reacts to certain situations and how she interacts with her fellow characters. I truly believe that you don’t have to love a MC in order for the book to be good and I found that I did not really warm to Holly like I thought I would. I did, however, enjoy Brannon and Nuñez and how they all worked together as characters within this story.

I also found it really helpful that Grammar included a glossary in the back of the book and I found myself flipping to it often. As someone who is not too familiar with Harajuku fashion, the glossary helped me understand certain terms in the novel and it really helped to bring the novel full circle for me. The ending of this story will definitely leave you with a few things to thing about, but don’t worry! This is only one book out of three, so I am very excited to see where Holly’s journey continues.
