Synopsis
Fight like a magical girl in this paperback original contemporary fantasy in which a Harajuku fashionista battles mutants—and social anxiety—by teaming up with an elite group of outcasts. Perfect for those obsessed with the technicolor worlds of Sailor Moon, The Umbrella Academy, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Book One of the Magic Mutants Trilogy.
Holly Roads uses Harajuku fashion to distract herself from tragedy. Her magical girl aesthetic makes her feel beautiful—and it keeps the world at arm’s length. She’s an island of one, until advice from an amateur psychic expands her universe. A midnight detour ends with her vs. exploding mutants in the heart of San Francisco.
Brush with destiny? Check. Waking up with blue blood, emotions gone haywire, and terrifying strength that starts ripping her wardrobe to shreds? Totally not cute. Hunting monsters with a hot new partner and his unlikely family of mad scientists? Way more than she bargained for.

Magic Mutant Nightmare Girl is truly unlike anything I have read before. Grammar gives us such a fantastic read about a girl who turns into a mutant after accidentally coming into contact with someone’s experiment gone wrong. Holly as a character is very eccentric and definitely makes some hasty decisions throughout the story, but this makes the pacing of the book very readable and there truly never is a dull moment while you are reading. We are immediately thrown into the action and the action never really lets us. If you’re looking for a slower paced fantasy novel, you have definitely come to the wrong place. Holly is definitely frustrating at times with how she reacts to certain situations and how she interacts with her fellow characters. I truly believe that you don’t have to love a MC in order for the book to be good and I found that I did not really warm to Holly like I thought I would. I did, however, enjoy Brannon and Nuñez and how they all worked together as characters within this story.
I also found it really helpful that Grammar included a glossary in the back of the book and I found myself flipping to it often. As someone who is not too familiar with Harajuku fashion, the glossary helped me understand certain terms in the novel and it really helped to bring the novel full circle for me. Tbh I really am a sucker for glossaries. I love them so much and I feel like they should be in all books. The story overall was very interesting and the mission that
The ending of this story will definitely leave you with a few things to thing about, but don’t worry! This is only one book out of three, so I am very excited to see where Holly’s journey continues.
Favorite Quotes
“Most superheroes were born exceptional, and others gained their abilities through happenstance. Their lives of duty doomed them to near-constant discomfort and self-sacrifice until death. At first, these people often ignored telltale gins of a greater calling.
I was beginning to understand why.”
Holly, Magic Mutant Nightmare Girl
“I’d already learned so much from them about the importance of teamwork – amongst other things. In some small way, allowing them this glimpse of myself felt like giving back. I hoped I could teach them something in what little guaranteed time we had left together. Even if it was just about fashion.”
Holly, Magic Mutant Nightmare Girl
“As the sickening refrain repeated itself in my head like a haunted chorus, I knew my future would be anything but kawaii.”
